I attended the best private schools k-12 and in 8th was valedictorian of my class. This led to a middle school backed scholarship to my high school and qualified me for scholarships from private donors to my high school. Needless to say, if these had not been offered the struggle would have been overwhelming for me to obtain this education.
Now, almost 20 years later, my children will not have these barriers. Even though my husband and I would have to sacrifice to send them to private schools, we have help through choice scholarship programs.
Our oldest will be a kindergartner in the 2019-20 school year, and I am proud to say we have exercised our right to choose the best educational path for him. We have the tools to select the best learning method and environment for him at any school in the city. As a parent what better feeling than to know whatever needs your child has, YOU select where they attend school. Is the process flawless? No. Do you have to put in time and effort to make the best school choice? Yes. Is it worth the extra effort to know he will be on the best path to excel? Absolutely.
Now that I have a family of my own, I’m beyond grateful that my mother was a choice advocate long before it existed. I will forever be grateful for her sacrifice and I too will fight for my children’s rights to the best education out there for them. I choose choice.
