According to the Indiana Department of Education, more than 63,000 students choose to attend a public school other than the district in which they live. About 50,000 students attend public charter schools, and 36,609 students attend private school through the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program.
The most inspiring part of this data is that each of these figures represents a child and family who had the information, access, ability and motivation to actively participate in deciding where to attend school. Each of these families made a conscious choice to join the particular school community that met their learning needs, be it traditional public, public charter, or private school.
Indiana is known nationwide for its robust school choice environment. Credit for that achievement goes to the dedicated teachers, school leaders, and policymakers who work every day to provide a quality education for Hoosier children. I am humbled to be a small part of the school choice movement and encourage you to get involved!
